Wealth and Business Succession

SMBC Trust Bank offers a wide range of trust solutions that can be calibrated to meet the important needs of our clients in the areas of wealth and business succession planning.

Examples of client needs that can be met by our bespoke solutions include:

  • "I want to make sure that all the shares of my business will be given to one heir that I will nominate" (e.g., the eldest son (president) should inherit the entire stake; no splitting of the stake among multiple heirs).
  • "I have selected a person to whom the shares of my business will be passed down, but I have not decided how the rest of my assets will be distributed." (Your entire estate must be covered by your last will and testament.)
  • "I plan to bequeath the shares of my business to my children but I want to make an arrangement with the Bank so that the Bank will look after the shares on behalf of the children by acting in their best interest until they reach a certain age."
  • "I want to make sure that the shares of my business will be passed down from my children to my grandchildren and so on."
  • "I want to bequeath the shares of my business to the predetermined charity of my choice."

Wealth Administration

SMBC Trust Bank is committed to the secure administration and long-term preservation of your valuable assets in accordance with your goals and requirements.

The use of trusts for the administration and preservation of your wealth is an option you should consider, especially if you have a broad range of assets but little time to care for them.
Assets in fiduciary accounts are administered in the Bank's name, protecting your privacy.
In addition, trust assets are kept separate from the corporate assets of SMBC Trust Bank, and a statement describing the state of your assets and activities is sent to you periodically.

Asset Purchase

At SMBC Trust Bank, we have a variety of asset purchase solutions that can assist you with wealth administration and succession planning at various stages of your wealth lifecycle.

For example, if you or your family member owns a listed company, the shares of the company are an important component of your wealth.
When purchasing such shares, however, you should be aware that your transaction may be scrutinized for or arouse suspicion about a possible violation of insider trading or market manipulation rules.
To mitigate these risks, we would advise you to set up a nondiscretionary trust with us and purchase such shares via a trust account.

Asset Disposal

To mitigate these risks, we would advise you to set up a nondiscretionary trust with us and sell such shares via a trust account.

Asset Administration and Preservation

SMBC Trust Bank is committed to the secure administration and long-term preservation of your valuable assets in accordance with your goals and requirements.

The use of trusts for asset administration reduces paperwork and other administrative burdens accompanying dividend collection, etc. Your assets are administered in the Bank's name, protecting your privacy with respect to your assets.
As an added protection, trusts are bankruptcy remote, and your trust assets will be shielded in the unlikely event of bankruptcy.
A statement describing the state of our asset administration and other activities is sent to you every month.

Administration of Marketable Securities in Trust

You may set up a trust in which the corporate shares, bonds and other marketable securities you own may be held, and we administer them in our name. We collect dividends and principal/coupon payments on your behalf, which are passed on to you once collection is made, and exercise any voting rights you may have in connection with your shares kept in the trust in accordance with your instructions, thus greatly minimizing the administrative burden you face.
Assets in fiduciary accounts are administered in our name, protecting your privacy with respect to the marketable securities kept in trust.
Trust assets are administered separately from the assets of the Bank.

Safekeeping of margin deposits

We administer the funds your customers deposit with you by placing them in a trust kept separately from the Bank's assets, thus preserving your customers' deposits in margin accounts for FX and other margin trading, while also ensuring legal compliance and customer protection.

Securities Investment Trust

A securities investment trust is a financial product where investors' funds are pooled together and invested primarily in marketable securities by the professional fund manager of an investment trust management company. Proceeds are distributed back to the investors.
Upon signing trust agreements with investment trust management companies, SMBC Bank takes custody of the investors' funds and safeguards and maintains strict control over them as trust assets.
